I thought our week would start off just like any other week really, you know me screeching at the kids to get ready for school so wanting a holiday LOL. Seriously I had thought that would be the case until last night that is. One phone call...all was dashed! Justin's mother had rang to let us know that Nanna Tuck had been taken to Maitland Hospital as she had fallen in the gutter & banged her head. At first I was wondering why the heck she was cleaning the gutters in the first place!!! But it turns out that I had misunderstood what was translated. Nanna Tuck had walked out to the roadside gutter to pick up a local newspaper, she used her gripper to grab the paper & steadied herself on the Oleander tree!!! A TREE!!! OMG!!! Next thing she knew was she was on the ground looking up at the sky! Luckily a lovely women driving past saw it happened & stopped. She rushed from her car & was yelling into her mobile at the same time. The neighbours all started coming out, some calling ambulances as well....one of them calling Nanna Tuck's son John. She was rushed to hospital & admitted there & then. It turned out that she has a large couple of lumps to her head.
We went to see her in the hospital today & it truly broke my heart. She did not know who we were. We spent 90 minutes or more there. We chatted with Aunty Dawn & Johnny, discussing what will happen now with Nanna Tuck. She is being assessed yet again tomorrow & Wednesday to be placed into an Aged Care Facility. So it is with a heavy heart that her home will now be packed up & placed on the market.
The entire time we were there Nana Tuck was very disorientated & kept thinking the ward was her home, not understanding why we were all standing around her in bed, wanting her walking stick & arguing everytime one of us told her that she had fallen, hurt her head & her hip. This would then send her telling us about the rod in her other leg from knee to hip socket. How much trouble it gives her etc.
I guess the long & the short of it all is that her mental capacity has diminished immensely since Christmas. She does not recognise people & does not know the day or date either. For a once spritely woman she is now a mere shadow of that lady. We are debating taking the children to see her but at the same time I really dont think any of them would cope nor would Nanna Tuck.
Anyway there is not much else to let you all know..I just needed to get this all down as its going round & round in circles in my head & I just can not concetrate on anything else.
I will keep you all posted on how things pan out this week.

I just wanted to say how sorry I am about Nana Tuck it must be hard for you.
I work with elderly dementia patients and have a few suggestions for when you pack up her house.
Put together a memory box and include a list of whats inside it (tape this to the inside of the lid) Confused people move things and hide them, don't always blame the staff!! At least you will have a record of what you put into it.
Photocopy Family Photograph albums and laminate the pages or glue them into a cheap old fashioned scrapbook, as they will get worn and the originals can easily get ruined in a care home.
Laminate photos for bedside tables and remove the glass from picture frames to prevent them getting smashed. (usually by accident!!)
Your excellent scrapping skills should come in handy here.
Good Luck xxx
